SSLv3 contains a vulnerability that has been referred to as the Padding Oracle On Downgraded Legacy Encryption (POODLE) attack. Support for SSL v3.0 remains widespread and many clients who support TLS implement a protocol downgrade to work around bugs in HTTPS servers, therefore browsers will retry failed connections with older protocol versions, including SSL v3.0.
