Postulado del
criptógrafo holandés Kerckhoffs (Auguste Kerckhoffs von Nieuwenhof, 1835-1903,
autor de uno de los libros históricos de la criptografía, La Cryptographie
militaire), que establece que la seguridad de cifrado debe residir,
exclusivamente, en el secreto de la clave y no en el desconocimiento del
algoritmo de cifrado. Antes bien, esta última debe ser de general conocimiento
por la comunidad criptográfica, para que pueda ser criptoanalizada y
descubiertas sus vulnerabilidades si las hubiere.

Kerckhoffs' Law
also known as Kerckhoffs' principle, assumption, or axiom, states that a
cryptosystem or cryptographic algorithm must be secure even if all its inner
workings, and everything about it (saving only the key) is known.
Originally stated
(by Auguste Kerckhoffs in the 19th century) that a system "must not be
required to be secret, and it must be able to fall into the hands of the enemy
without inconvenience."
