Information that
has not been determined pursuant to E.O. 12958, as amended, or any predecessor
order, to require protection against unauthorized disclosure and that is not
designated as classified. [CNSSI_4009:2010]
Technically not a
classification level; but this is a feature of some classification schemes,
used for government documents that do not merit a particular classification.
This is because the information is low-impact, and therefore does not require
any special protection, such as vetting of personnel.
Unclassified is
a security classification assigned to official information that does not
warrant the assignment of Confidential, Secret, or Top Secret markings but
which is not publicly-releasable without authorization.
